"It's the most frustrating time of the year!"
06:09pm 30/11/2006

Ryan
Christmas a time of joy, stress and frustrating. Although we have figured a more efficent (and cost effective) way of doing gifts within Rogues Fellowship but there were a few who decided to attempt to go against it without any kind of verbal discussion but the actions of children.

With the wedding soon to be in full swing I figured that saving everyone some money would be a good thing. Problem is that it required everyone making a list of what they wanted. I did not think it was very hard just a few minutes of their time...but the procrastinators don't want the responsibility of having to actually get out there EARLY to get gifts and prefer the last minute crap gifts that have found a place in my heart and collecting dust on one of my shelves.

With school coming to a close for me by the next semester I am afraid that I am seeing this Christmas as a time of Stress than a time of anything else. Talking to college counselors, to sheriff recruiters, and attempting to design a schedule is very taxing with the upcoming Dundracon and my responsibilities of running the beginners LARP (thanks again Lorie for doing it by the way!) and my Cyberpunk game.

With Anicka still upon my mind (It happened November 25) and my family having a bit more problems than usual (If my family were a comic book they would have issues) this Christmas I feel as though I have the weight of the world upon my shoulders.

You scored as Storyteller. The Storyteller is in it for the plot: the sense of mystery and the fun of participating in a narrative that has the satisfying arc of a good book or movie. He enjoys interacting with well-defined NPCs, even preferring antagonists who have genuine motivations and personality to mere monsters. To the Storyteller, the greatest reward of the game is participating in a compelling story with interesting and unpredictable plot threads, in which his actions and those of his fellow characters determine the resolution.

With apologies to Robin Laws.

Friday Knights Faltering
08:53am 11/10/2006

Ryan

Once again it appears that another Friday Game will not be happening. Although this is only the second week in a row, it is also becoming a regular pattern. Two months ago we did not game for three weeks straight, then last month two weeks in a row.

At the moment I feel a bit perplexed about the situation. I understand that people have lives, that things come up, and emergencies can be sudden. The problem is that its never an emergency it is almost always something that is known some time in advance and my friends in fear of upsetting me wait until Thursday or Friday to inform me that they are unable to attend, that is if they contact me at all (the exception to this rule is  steypuft who usually contacts me a week in advance).

In the grand scheme of life, with  intrepid_glory and I on the eve of marriage, my career finally in sight and the idea of having children when these two things come to pass, my time to game in a regular basis is dwindling. Pretty soon I will be the one that will be unable to game. Its bad enough I worry how Rogue's Fellowship will deal with it, but I personally believe that that is when the Friday Knights will come to an end. I run 95% of their games, we always game at my house. I suppose I could give the reigns to  steypuft but even then I fear that it will only prevent the inevitable from happening for a few months.

I suppose the situation with Rogue's Fellowship is also becoming stressful. At one point when I stopped playing because of external & internal issues within the gaming group, it was the others who came to me and asked me to return. They felt that I was getting my gaming "fix" on Fridays and they didn’t find it fair. I understood and rejoined, the group hadn’t done any gaming since my absence.

But once again the same crap that frustrated me before is now happening again. Players showing up three hours late without contacting anyone, discussions about something that nothing to do with the game that lasts for 30 min or more, and constant phone calls.  I may seem anal-retentive but when my friends and I go to the movies we don't talk over the movie for the majority of it.  When we go to a hockey game we don't show up 2 hours late.  They appear to have a understanding of social etiquette with other things, so why is gaming the fucking exception?

At times I worry that the games I run are not captivating enough for people to enjoy. On the other hand most of the time I feel like I am wasting my time.  When I sit there at watch them talk endlessly about something that we could have talked about on Wednesday (which ironically is what we hung out on Wednesdays for and rarely talk at all now) I consider what I could be doing that is more productive, like leaving and cleaning my house, reading a school textbook, or playing City of Heroes/City of Villains.  I wonder if I did leave like that, if it may get them to understand that I am upset.  But I remember that to do such a thing would be (in my opinion) incredibly selfish and this gaming experience is not just about myself but equally about everyone else involved.

At this point I am unsure what to do and any advice would be extremely helpful.

Question To All...
10:45pm 24/09/2006

Ryan
Well we had our final Star Wars Feng Shui game run by Aaron this Sunday and next week we will begin our Exalted game run by David.

Although there were a few “twists” in the Star Wars game (mainly I attempting to not get us all killed by a few people with explosives) it went very well in my opinion.

I did notice something strange and I wanted some opinions of other people so please REPLY!

Are there certain Gamemasters that in retrospect you play more for them than for your character?

To be as general as I can are there some games where you adhere more to the Gamemaster and their style of playing rather than to your own character’s personality? If you do play to your Gamemaster style then why?

Amusing Traveling Incidents
01:12pm 18/09/2006

Ryan
  • So [info]intrepid_gloryhas requested that I speak of two incidents that happened on our 7-day trip or Oregon.

    Incident # 1

While heading to our friend [info]rabid_pickle house, we observed a KB Toy store inside a large outside shopping center. While traveling from the parking lot to KB, we came across a bookstore. This bookstore had no role-playing books of any kind and no science fiction section, merely a “fiction” section which was way under stalked. On the other hand their religion section was quite large although it appeared to focus on Christianity and Catholic books.

When I was getting ready to leave the store Alisha pointed out a book she though I would be interested in. At the front of the store was a huge amount of “Idiot Guide” books. Once such was “An Idiot’s Guide to Voodoo” Since I play City of Heroes/City of Villains and have a character named Voodoom, I figured for the low price of $7.50 it would make a fine addition to the pile of books we now stack on the floor since we have no more room for them on any of our 5 bookshelves. So after visiting the KB, and getting some ice cream we returned so I could purchase the book.

While I was going to pay for this book Alisha waved me outside and pointed out another book she wanted me to get. This book was “The Idiot’s Guide to Amazing Sex” for another mere $7.50. So I go up to the counter and place the books on top of each other and this is what it pretty much broke down too:

    Idiot’s Guide to Voodoo - $7.50
    Idiot’s Guide to Amazing Sex - $7.50
    Sales tax – 0.00 (Oregon)

The look on the cashers face and she contemplated what kid of depraved sexual Voodoo acts my fiancé and I were going to be doing with the combined information from these books – Totally Priceless

    Incident # 2

While leaving the bookstore we stopped to look at a window display. The window was covered with several nativity scenes. One of them, a new style was silver statues. None of them had any faces at all, for the most part they looked cloaked in secrecy. As I looked at the statues I found a connection with Episode III when Anakin confronts Senator Palpatine with similar looking statues outside his office. I turned to Alisha pointed at the nativity statue and said:

    “Birth of a Sith Lord…”

Conquest 2006!
12:26am 09/09/2006

Ryan

So the good news!  Conquest went extremely well this year!  The bad news is that it will most likely it is still my last Conquest.  With all the frustration of them attempting to force me into running 12 hours, and the utter lack of gamers there it proved to me that Kublacon is the much better convention and I would pick it as my 2nd con of the year (Dundracon being the 1st).

So if your looking for a quick scan of the games I played here they are if you want more detail well then click on em!

So I missed the sign-ups for Aaron’s Star Wars Feng Shui game so I decided to do another LARP on Saturday morning.

Sunday morning was my X-crawl game

My game went well, but not as well as I hoped.  The majority of the players were my own friends and the only person I did not know was in fact Scott Bagely’s brother!  They had a blast with the X-crawl characters and all did a fine job playing with them.  I hope to write more when I have more time…

On Monday we played the Munchkin Bites! Card game then headed to the restaurant we went to last year, said out goodbyes and headed home.

I will miss the people of Conquest, but I will not miss the convention itself.  Perhaps I may come up for a single day next year but in the end my final Conquest was a good one.

1st Post in LJ!
10:05pm 08/09/2006

Ryan
So this is my first post for Live Journal!

So today I went to a practice physical testing for the Sheriffs Office in my area. I had to perform three tests:

1) I had to climb over a 6 ft. wall.
2) I had to run a determined length in less than one minute.
3) I had to carry a 165 lb. Dummy to a specific spot in less than one minute.

I could not get over that dang wall. I don’t know if my body was still too weak (I have three PE classes at San Jose State twice a week: Weight Training, Jogging, and Beginning Karate. All of these classes are on the same day with Karate only once a week). Or if I just didn’t have the upper body strength to do so. I weigh over 200 lbs which is way over my supposed to be body weight. One of the Officers informed me that he believed I could get over the wall if I had worn shoes with better traction for that particular wall (it didn’t help that it was raining either). So I plan on going next week when I have time just to see if other shoes would help. The fact remains though that I either have to lose some weight or gain more upper body strength (actually I really need to do both).

The recruiter seemed happy that I was getting my bachelors degree in Justice Studies and when I asked about an internship (it is required for graduation) he told me that they did not have one at the moment but Volunteer work may in fact work as well.

What was really neat though was that I discovered that my local Comic dealer knows the Recruiter and is also considering a career in the Sheriff’s department. I got some new comics today specifically the final G.I. Joe & Transformers The Art of War and Super-Skrull Annihilation the entire 4-part series. Both were a good read but I am still waiting for the Ultimates # 12 and Civil War # 4 to come out.

I have also decided that I plan on ditching school next week in order to go with Alisha to visit her father, James and Kelly and her husband (also named James) near Portland. Alisha’s father is going to take us to a Indian casino which should be fun, since I won like 300 at the roulette table last time we went with him.

I am really excited about assisting Dylan run the Firefly LARP. I am also thrilled that I Lorie is going to make the game for us. Working on the Cyberpunk LARP I have a great understanding on how difficult making a LARP can be. I hope this will give me some experience for when I run not only the Cyberpunk LARP Alisha and I are working on but also a Cybergeneration LARP for teenager at Kublacon 2006.

I plan on writing about how Dundracon went but it will be lengthy so for now I leave you with my first LJ
